California Tribes Bring Dam issue to Buffett. Call for local Tribes and activists to support fight to save wild salmon!
Representatives from the Yurok, Karuk, and Klamath Tribes are campaigning to remove four dams on the Klamath River in Northern California and Southern Oregon. The dams block all migration of salmon to over 350 miles of habitat and degrade water quality. For the Klamath River Tribes, salmon represent an important traditional food, a focus of religious and ceremonial practices, and a way to make a living.

Where the river once teemed with over a million migrating salmon with seasonal runs throughout the year, today some runs have gone extinct and others teeter on the brink of extinction.
The good news is that doing the right thing is in the economic self interest of Buffett and his shareholders! State and federal agencies have released reports which conclude that dam removal is actually cheaper than relicensing the dams due to the expensive mitigation measures required for a new license and the relatively small amount of power the dams generate.
The dams are owned by a subsidiary of Mid American Energy which in turn is owned by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.
Last year Tribal representatives appealed to Buffett for help. The leaders of Mid American and the local power division PacifiCorp have consistently negotiated with the Tribes in bad faith. However, Buffett rebuffed the Tribes and refused to meet to discuss the issue.
This year the Tribes will return. The goal is to continue to educate Berkshire shareholders about the dams’ impact on their lives and culture and in addition let them know that keeping the dams could be a $500 million dollar mistake.
We need your help with our three main events!
Progressive film night, Wednesday April 30th at 7pm at McFoster's Natural Kind Cafe (38th & Farnam). The evening will feature a film chronicling the struggle of Klamath communities and speakers from the Tribes.
We humbly request that area Tribes and progressive activists join our struggle. You can help by joining us at our press conference. It will be held at 10 am at the Courtyard by Marriot, 101 S. 10th Street, Omaha.
In addition we will rally outside the Qwest Center Saturday morning at 9 a.m. to picket the event and pass out flyers. We urge local Tribal members and advocates of social and environmental justice to join us in our cause.
